COMMON PREREQUISITES MANUAL

Coding in University Counseling Manuals/Catalogs

For purposes of conveying consistent information through the Common Prerequisite Counseling Manual and the university counseling manuals, the following codes have been developed defining various courses. The following codes define the types of courses that students would need to take in the lower division for an associate in arts or baccalaureate degree:

P - Prerequisites that are required for admission into the university upper division program and must be completed by the student at either a community college or a state university prior to being admitted into the program. Students may be admitted into the university without completing the prerequisites, but may not be admitted into the program. In some cases, students may be denied admission to the institution if they have not met the prerequisites for the program.

*P - Prerequisites that are lower-level courses required for preparation for the university major and must be taken at a community college or in a university lower division program prior to a student receiving a baccalaureate degree from a university. It is preferred that these prerequisites be completed in the freshmen and sophomore years. However, they are not required for admission into the specified program and students may not be denied admission to a program due to their deficiency.
